In state action Friday, Maine South tops Wheaton-Warrenville South

Maine South defeats Wheaton Warrenville South

The expected fireworks never took place Friday at Maine South.

The defending champions Hawks burst out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and held on for an impressive 27-9 win over No. 1 Wheaton-Warrenville South.

Two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown pushed the 2-0 Hawks to the early advantage, and the 1-1 Tigers never produced much in the way of an offensive attack to get back into the game.

The Tigers’ only touchdown came on a 20-yard scoring strike at the end of the first half, but they could not take advantage of a poor offensive execution by the Hawks at the end of the half. Given the ball at the Maine South 40-yard line with just under one minute remaining, the Tigers had to settle for a 52-yard field goal attempt that was five yards short of the mark.

The third quarter produced a safety for Wheaton when a Maine South punt snap went through the hands of the punter and out of the end zone. But Maine South controlled the ball in the fourth quarter and Matt Perez came up with a great quarterback sack on a third-and-four play with eight minutes to go to snuff out the last of the Tigers’ chances.

Maine South got their final touchdown with 1:35 left in the game to widen the final margin.
